Real World Evaluation of a New Environment Adaptive Localization System

Abstract:
In order to assist the responders during disaster management a self-organizing, scalable, heterogeneous and location aware WSN architecture called Disaster Aid Network (DAN) was proposed in our previous work. One of the main aspects of DAN is the localization aspect which deals with the development of a subsystem for patient localization at the disaster site. The patient localization is split into ranging and position estimation tasks. In this paper a new environment and mobility adaptive signal strength based ranging technique for range estimation is proposed and is tested using both close-to-reality simulations and empirical analysis. These range information is given as input to a particle filter based position estimation algorithm previously proposed by us to provide the location estimate of the patient. In this paper a new localization system is setup by implementing this ranging and position estimation technique in a ZigBee network. A real world evaluation of this localization system is undergone and its localization performance is analyzed.
